THE PROJECT
The IN-CARE project aims to design, implement and evaluate an innovative educational intervention, "Teach-to-communicate", which relies on different didactic methods, including lessons, experiential workshops and online self-education activities.
“Teach-to-communicate” takes place in a multidisciplinary learning context to promote collaboration, a sense of belonging to the care team and greater understanding of the scope of practice and responsibilities of all those involved in difficult communication. Interdisciplinarity has the potential to promote reflection on lived experience and the awareness that teamwork is essential.
WHAT IS MEANT BY "DIFFICULT COMMUNICATION"?
In this project, difficult communication does not only mean communication of news that can negatively impact on a person’s life, but more generally communication in complex situations such as:
communicating with patients/families that can have strong emotional reactions (for example anger, crying, aggression) or communications that arise staff’s strong emotions (for example anger);
patients/families’ limited or no awareness of the clinical conditions, disease trajectory and prognosis;
patients/families’ preferences for treatments of uncertain benefit or unrealistic expectations.
